Job Summary:

The University of Colorado, Colorado School of Public Health’s (ColoradoSPH) Centers for American Indian and Alaska Native Health (CAIANH) seeks a Director to support its vision and mission to improve the health and well-being of American Indians and Alaska Natives. The Director provides leadership as well as operational and fiscal oversight of Centers faculty and staff, as they pursue research, education, program development, and information dissemination consistent with this mission. The Director position will be 0.2 FTE administrative appointment associated with a full-time, 12-month faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, tenure eligible, within the Colorado School of Public Health.

The position will report directly to the Dean, Colorado School of Public Health.

Supervision Exercised

Employees of CAIANH report to this position. Depending on the scope of activities, the Center Director will supervise staff engaged in various activities related to American Indian and Alaska Native health. Faculty members are affiliated with the Center and have primary appointments with the schools of CU Anschutz. 

Examples of Work Performed

·         Developing, championing, and sustaining a shared vision for the Center in partnership with American Indian and Alaska Native communities, Center faculty, staff and students, and other constituents, and translating that vision into strategic priorities and measurable impact

·         Leading and furthering the strategic objectives of the Center, including long range strategic planning and implementation, creating collaborative and innovative community-driven research, education and training programs, technical support programs and knowledge dissemination, ensuring alignment with the Center’s vision and evolving community priorities

·         Ensuring multidirectional communication with and participation by internal and external faculty, community, and sponsors

·         Leading the development and advancement of the Centers by creating strong local, regional, and national partnerships with community organizations, leaders, and members

·         Oversee, support, and contribute to identifying and securing external funding for the Center’s research, education, training, program development, and dissemination programs, including competitive federal, state, foundation, and philanthropic support

·         Mentoring faculty at all ranks and at all stages of professional development to successfully navigate the academic environment, to engage meaningfully with community partners, and to acquire sponsored research

·         Providing a supportive, responsive framework for fiscal, scientific, and program work

·         Cultivating and assessing research opportunities to address the needs of tribal communities

·         Ensuring the Centers’ work is of the highest scientific rigor and merit which maximizes local benefit to participating communities

·         Assembling and leading the CAIANH Executive Committee

·         Leading the CAIANH Administrative Team, providing oversight of strategic, fiscal, and operational plan development

·         Ensuring reports and required documents are prepared and submitted to funders, ColoradoSPH, and the University in a timely and quality fashion consistent with applicable policies

·         Ensuring compliance with all institutional and sponsor guidelines and regulations regarding fiscal, human resource, and scientific matters

·         Increasing the Center’s resource base by cultivating philanthropy, including building relationships with donors and partners, collaborating with advancement efforts, and supporting long-term sustainability of Center priorities

·         Maintaining a record of scholarly achievement, extramural funding, and service consistent with appointment and advancement within the ColoradoSPH, and contributing to faculty mentorship and development within the Center

·         Performing other duties incident to the office of the Director as requested by the Dean.

Work Location:

Hybrid – this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate Professor, Tenure Eligible

·         A terminal doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, DrPH) in a public health related field, or a professional degree (MD, DDS, DVM, DO) with a master’s degree in a public health related field

·         Minimum of 8 years of work in a public health setting (including research and education) that is specifically related to American Indian and Alaska Native communities

·         Academic qualifications compatible with appointment to the rank of Associate Professor, tenure eligible or tenured, at the ColoradoSPH, University of Colorado Anschutz

·         Demonstrated success acquiring and managing externally sponsored public health research, education, or training funding

·         Demonstrated experience mentoring early-stage investigators, trainees, students, or research staff

·         Minimum of 3 years of experience supervising projects, programs, or center-level activities

·         Demonstrated knowledge of and experience addressing tribal sovereignty in research, education, and program development

·         Demonstrated record of scholarly achievement and trajectory consistent with advancement to Professor rank

Professor, Tenure Eligible

·         A terminal doctoral degree (e.g. PhD, DrPH) in a public health related field, or a professional degree (MD, DDS, DVM, DO) with a master’s degree in a public health related field

·         Minimum of 8 years of work in a public health setting (including research and education) that is specifically related to American Indian and Alaska Native communities

·         Academic qualifications compatible with an appointment to the rank of full professor with tenure preferred at the ColoradoSPH, University of Colorado Anschutz

·         History of successfully acquiring and managing externally sponsored, large scale public health relevant research

·         Minimum of 5 years of experience mentoring early-stage investigators to become externally sponsored researchers 

·         Minimum of 5 years of experience in supervising projects, programs, or center-level activities

·         Demonstrated knowledge of and experience addressing tribal sovereignty in research, education, and program development

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

·         Excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level

·         Demonstrated experience in working successfully with a variety of staff and teams

·         Evidence of effective communication, oral and written, with a wide range of audiences, including scientists, community members, advocacy organizations, and media

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

This position requires the ability to work collaboratively with varied faculty, leadership, and teams in research, training, technical assistance, dissemination, and program development. The candidate must have:

·         Substantial experience and proven success in establishing positive partnerships and working in collaboration with tribal communities

·         Knowledge of the unique needs of American Indian and Alaska Native communities

·         A strong record of excellence in research and scholarship

·         An established record of receiving a variety of research funding from Federal, state, and private sponsors related to American Indian and Alaska Native health

·         Experience implementing and leading a team-based leadership structure with shared accountability and fostering a culture of trust and independence

·         Ability to maintain cooperative and supportive relationships with project staff, Center faculty and community and other partners

·         Experience in developing and leading strong collaborative teams, especially in multidisciplinary endeavors

·         Knowledge and experience implementing initiatives that foster a respectful, collaborative organizational culture and promote effective engagement across a wide range of backgrounds

·         Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

·         Understanding of ColoradoSPH goals and objectives with focus on advocating for CAIANH’s specific needs and distinctive position on campus and in the community

·         Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to multi-task and manage competing priorities and time demands

·         Extensive experience managing the fiscal aspects of large scale, complex projects related to research, training, education, or program development

·         Ability to stay abreast of policies and factors which may impact the landscape of American Indian and Alaska Native communities

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

The starting salary range for this position has been established at $145,000 to $180,000 for the position of Associate Professor and an Administrative supplement of 5% of the faculty member’s salary, up to a maximum of $30,000.

The starting salary range for this position has been established at $160,000 to $300,000 for the position of full Professor and an Administrative supplement of 5% of the faculty member’s salary, up to a maximum of $30,000.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
